How to Repair window Screen

Method 1

Materials & tools

• Clean cloth
• Screen repair tape
• Scissors

Step 1
Use a pair of scissors to trim messy wires around the hole and try to make it neat. After that, wipe the surrounding dust with a clean cloth.

Trimming messy wires will help you repair easily, and the wires of fiberglass window screen and plastic window screen are easier to trim.

Step 2
Choose a screen repair tape whose size is suitable for the broken hole. There are 3 popular sizes: 10 cm × 10 cm (large size), 7 cm × 7 cm (small size) and 5 cm × 300 cm (strip-shaped).

There are three popular sizes of repair tapes for selection.

If choose the strip-shaped repair tape, you can cut a piece out and use it directly.

Step 3
Tear the glue on the rear. Then, stick it over the broken hole from the inside. If you choose the strip-shaped one, just cut a piece out and pasted on. The size of the piece you cut according to the size of the hole and your need.

The glue on the rear of the repair tape can make it stick on the window screen enduringly.

This is the final process of repairing window screen, and then, it is finished.

Method 2

Material & tools

• Scissors
• Intact screen mesh
• Curved upholstery needle with strong string
• Tape (optional)

Step 1
Cut a piece of screen mesh out from an intact window screen to cover the entire tear. Leave a one-inch (about 2.5 cm) margin on each side.

If you have an old screen, you could use it directly. However, if you care about appearance of the screen, you'd better buy a new one in the same material and color.

Notice: In order to enhance the visual, we choose a piece of intact window screen in black to repair the white one.

For appearance of the screen, you can buy a new one in the same dimension.

The size of the piece you cut depends on the size of the hole.

Step 2
Thread a curved upholstery needle with strong string of the same color as the screen. You can use a straight needle if you can reach both sides of the screen, but it will be more difficult and time consuming.

As to the selection of string, you can try fishing thread, which is invisible and very strong.

We choose a straight needle to repair the screen, for it is a more common tool we use.

When you can't reach both sides of the screen, a curved upholstery needle is needed, and it also can be used on stainless steel window screen.

Step 3
Cover the tear with the piece of screen mesh which you have already cut. If you didn't take the window screen down, you can hold this repair piece in place temporarily with tape.

If you have taken the screen down and placed it horizontally, you can keep a firm hand on a side of the screen mesh piece.

Step 4
Sew around the edge of the screen mesh piece. Take small stitches, making sure to reach all grids. What we want to get is to bring the two pieces together as closely as possible.

In order to sew tight, you should take small stitches to reach all grids.

Step 5
Tie the thread off with a strong knot, at least double tied. Ensure that there are no gaps where insects can get in. Then, it is finished.

A strong knot basically eliminates gaps between the repair piece and the screen.

After the five-step procedure, the broken window screen has been repaired well.
